The athlete‘s heart: analysis of cardiac structure and function. Is athletic heart a healthy heart?.
Background. Wrestling and Judo are sports which can be characterised by intensive and shortterm physical, isometric above all, effort, while football is characterised by longterm physical isotonic effort. The dominant compensatory cardiologic mechanism with both groups of sportsmen is left ventricular hypertrophy. Study Design. To evaluate the morphology and left ventricular function of the group of wrestlers and footballers in the period of competition time and non athletes. Methods. 67 wrestlers and judo players (the time of their active sportslife was 12±1.6 years), and 64 footballers (13±1.4 year of active sportslife) were included in the study. The reference group included 62 students of medicine who were not active in any sport. R wave in V5, V6 leads and Leon-Sokolow‘s sign were evaluated by electrocardiography. The interventricular septum and the posterior wall thickness, index of stroke and enddiastolic left ventricular volume, ejection fraction, left ventricular mass index and left ventricular diastolic function were evaluated by echocardiography. Results. Mean value of R wave in V5, V6 leads and Leon-Sokolow‘s sign in wrestlers and judo players, and mean values of interventricular septum and posterior wall thickness in both groups of athletes pointed at hypertrophy of the left ventricular myocardium. The enlargement of the enddiastolic volume index was present in footballers but not in other groups. The mean value of the left ventricular stroke index and ejection fraction was higher than the reference values in both groups of athletes. The enlargement of the left ventricular mass index was present in wrestlers but not in other groups. Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction was not registered in either group. Conclusion. Concentric hypertrophy predominantly occurred in wrestlers and judo players, and eccentric hypertrophy of the left ventricular myocardium predominantly occurred in footballers.

The neurotoxic effect of aluminium as a model for development of Alzheimer‘s disease.
Introduction: Recent epidemiological, neuropathological, and biochemical studies have suggested a possible link between the neurotoxicity of aluminium and the pathogenesis of Alzheimer‘s disease. Goal: The present study was aimed to investigate the possible role of aluminium as a potential neurotoxic agent in development of Alzheimer‘s disease. Material and methods: There were two groups of animals - control (six animals) and treated (twenty animals). Treated adult male Wistar rats were spanided into 3 groups. First group (eight animal) were intraperitoneally injected with AlCl3 solution in dose 90 mg/kg aluminium every other day, during four weeks. Second group (six animal) were intramuscular injected with AlCl3 solution in dose 2 mg/kg aluminium daily, during four weeks. Third group received AlCl3 2% solution via drinking water during five weeks. Organs of all animal after completely autopsy are fixed in formalin, blocked in parafin and cut with microtome. We use hematoxylin & eosin, Cresil violet, Bielschowsky silver stain, and Congo red stain. Results: Chemical peritonitis was detected at each animal treated with aluminium by intraperitoneally aplication. In tubulo-interstitial part of the kidney many proximal tubules were hyperdilated. In brain, most pronounced changes were observed in pyramidal layer of cerebral cortex. It is characterized by shrinkage of the cell body, tortuosity of the dendrites, and hyperchromatosis whereby the Nissl substance and the neurofibrils fuse with the deeply staining nucleus-"dark neurons". Discussion and conclusions: The findings in our experiment suggested that aluminum alone might not be cause of Alzheimer‘s disease, however, it can thus be concluded that aluminium might accumulate in the long term in vital organs such as kidney and brain, with distinct cytotoxic and neurotoxic effects.

Therapy of localy advanced rectal cancer-importance of surgery and preoperative radiotherapy.
Background.Survival analysis of preoperatively radiated patients with locally advanced rectal cancer is very significant. It estimates effect of diagnostic and preoperative therapy on the stage of cancer, selaction of operative procedure and overall outcome of treatment this group of patients. Materials and methods.Sixty-three patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (37 men,26 women) received preoperative chemo radiation therapy.54 patients are radically operated,8 palliativly and one patient isn‘t operated. They were operated in the period from june,2000. until october,2004.Using the program packet ‘Statistika‘ we arrange are grouped references and presented them with Kaplan-Mayer curve. Results. In our group of 63 patients mean follow up was 48 months.35 patients are alive and 28 of them are dead.Overall survival for three years is 60%,while for five years is 47,5%.In the group of radically operated patients (54 patients) three year survival is 67,5% and five year survival is 54,2%
